How did we arrive at this definition?

Prof Dr Urselmann writes in the Gabler WirtschaftslexikonThe term “online fundraising” is therefore only used when the internet is at least used as a sales channel, and not necessarily as a communication channel as well. For example, a donation via an online donation form would also be categorised as online fundraising if this donation option had been communicated in advance via a poster, i.e. offline.”

According to this definition, the key to online fundraising is that the donation is made via the Internet. However, as such, online communication is not absolutely essential to this definition.

We think that this definition falls short, or rather that it describes the nature of an online donation,which can of course also be raised via offline channels, just as offline donations can be acquired via online channels.

The difference between digital fundraising and online fundraising is that online fundraising uses a single digital technology (the internet), whereas digital fundraising utilizes all available digital technologies to raise funds for charitable purposes.
